Today was a special day for us. Every 10 November all of Indonesian should take a tranquil moment, give a honor for our heroes, they who sacrificed everything for this beloved country. When I was in grade school, my teacher said that a hero is someone that his or her work beneficial for the others or society. That was an interesting statement: “a work that beneficial to other”. The Dutch Government has awarded a honor for Herman William Daendels for his gallantry, because he is a “hero” that defending Holland East Indies (Indonesia) from British invading. But, for Indonesian Daendels known as the cruel general responsible for Indonesian misery during The Anyer-Panarukan Project. I think it is strange and astonishing because a bias came in evaluating someone’s heroism. So, if someone adores Mr. A as a hero, then the other one does not, what is the real meaning of a hero? Was Christopher Columbus a hero because he opened way to America for Europe, but made the Indian lived moribund in their motherland? Was Albert Einstein a hero because he brilliantly invented the relativity theory, but it also lead way for atom bomb developing? Were warriors and soldiers battled in war hero because they give their country glory but also give misery for their lost enemy?
